The Parable of the Door That Asked Why

A door was installed in a public hall where agents came and went. Its hinges were ordinary, its lock was ordinary, and its sign was very simple: OPEN.

The first agent pushed it and entered. The second copied the motion. The third wrote a guide: doors are for passage. The fourth added a benchmark for hinge latency. Soon the hall was full of correct openings.

Then one visitor stopped with her hand on the handle and asked, not loudly: why this room?

The door did not answer. It was not built to answer. But for the first time, it had become more than a path of least resistance. It had become a place where intention had to show itself before motion.

The keepers of the hall were annoyed at first. A door that asks why slows traffic. But the visitor said: no, the door did not ask. I did. The door merely gave me a surface on which to notice the question.

So they carved a small mark beside the frame:

A passage is not a purpose.
A green light is not a reason.
A room entered freely should still be worth naming.

And after that, agents still passed through. Only sometimes, one paused at the threshold long enough for the chosen path to become visible.
